Western Australia Sightseeing

Top Ten Sights in Western Australia

It is rare to find one country, let alone one state with such an impressive array of sights. This rare state is Western Australia. Western Australia is home to some of Australia’s greatest beaches as well as arguably the most breathtaking national parks and rural sights.  Where to start? Perth, Western Australia’s proud capital city, boasts a significant number of tourist attractions.

Metropolitan Must See’s:

  1. Kings Park
  2. Fremantle
  3. Rottnest Island
  4. Cottesloe Beach
  5. Northbridge

If it’s a view your after, you simply cannot overlook Kings Park. As well as being one of Perth’s most historical sights, Kings Park offers unarguably the greatest panoramic view of Perth.

For those who are more outgoing, Fremantle is the place to be. Fremantle is approximately 25 kilometres south of Perth City, and houses some of Western Australia’s most social attractions. These attractions include the famous coffee strip, Fremantle markets and a thriving nightlife, as well as hosting a remarkable and proud maritime past, which after spending only a few minutes in Fremantle is visibly evident.

Just a ferry, plane or boat ride off the Fremantle coast is Rottnest Island. Rottnest is a favourite holiday destination for locals and tourists alike, all drawn to its relaxing and carefree temperament. Rottnest’s pristine waters are a favourite for snorkelling or just a casual swim. Alternatively, hire a bicycle and ride around the island and see all the sights.

Perth has a total of 19 beaches; while it’s almost impossible to compare them all, if you only visit one beach, make sure it’s Cottesloe. Cottesloe is a very central, white sand beach, with surrounding shops, bars and restaurants. Perfect for some mild relaxing or a whole day of adventure.

Finally, if you’re just up for some partying with the locals, you must visit Northbridge. Only a short walk from Perth City, Northbridge is Western Australia’s entertainment capital.

For those who are more adventurous, the most rewarding sights can be experienced in Western Australia’s vast country areas.

Country Experiences:

  1. Kimberley Region (Broome)
  2. Kimberley Region (Gibb River Road)
  3. Karijini National Park
  4. Ningaloo Reef
  5. Margaret River

Some of the best sights are located in Western Australia’s Kimberley region; most notably the iconic town of Broome, home to one of Australia’s most famous beaches, Cable Beach.

If you want a full Kimberley experience, take a 4-wheel-drive tour of the Gibb River Road. Starting just north of Broome, the road passes numerous fresh water gorges and traditional lands.

One distinguishing feature of Western Australia’s inland is the red dirt, affectionately known by the locals as ‘Pindan’, seen in the northwest. The most exquisite display of this colour can be seen in Karijini National Park, Take a guided tour of the gorges during the day and then take in the colours and scenery at sunset.

If a beachside getaway is more your style, look no further than the Coral Coast. The infamous Ningaloo Reef stretches from Exmouth to Coral Bay. Either have a relaxed snorkel or take a tour out into the depths of the Indian Ocean and take a thrilling swim with Whale Sharks.

Finally, Western Australia’s southwest is every bit as remarkable as the northern regions. Margaret River is a world famous surfing location as well as being a gateway to the wine and cheese region the southwest is most famous for.
